Goldie ‘Esslin’ Waiheke Island Merlot 2010

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 16-Apr-2012
The ‘Esslin' Merlot is a selection of the two best barrels of Merlot from an exceptional year. Fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine was aged 13 months in 50% new French oak. Bright ruby-garnet red colour, pale-red on rim. This has a subtle, building nose of complex dark plum, earth and cedary oak aromas lifted with red florals and spice notes. Medium-full bodied, this is concentrated and deeply packed with dark red berries and fruit-cake flavours interwoven with brown spices, cedar and tobacco. The wine is still tightly bound, somewhat restrained in expression, with fine-grained tannins featuring in the firmly textured palate. This has near-ethereal layers of spice and oak which unfold and carry through to a sustained but understated, dry finish. This is a firm, restrained wine, with brooding flavours of fruit beginning to show some complexity, and positive oak cedar. Match with slow cooked game meat over the next 7-9+ years. 18.0+/20 Apr 2012 RRP $60.00
