Gillman Matakana 2008

Cabernet Franc from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 19-Aug-2014
Very dark, deep, black-hued red with some garnet and brick on the rim. This has a very smooth and harmoniously melded, complex aromatic bouquet of soft, ripe red berry fruits entwined with spices, cedar, game and secondary dried herb nuances lifted by oak and a little volatility. Medium-full bodied, the palate is elegantly presented with a concentrated core of red berry and redcurrant fruit flavours unfolding layers of oak spices and cedar and subtle secondary savoury game-like elements. The fruit is lifted and interwoven with very fine-grained tannin extraction and the mouthfeel balances fruit sweetness with grip. The structure provides the drive carrying the flavours of spices and cedar to a very long and sustained finish. This is a very elegantly concentrated red-fruited Cabernet Franc and Merlot blend with refined structure and cedary oak. Match with roast lamb, beef and hard cheeses over the next 7-8+ years. 70% Cabernet Franc, 28% Merlot and 2% Malbec from the ‘Gillman’ vineyard, hand-picked and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine spending 21 days on skins and aged 2 years in 50% new Seguin Moreau oak barrels. 157 cases made. 18.5/20 Aug 2014 RRP $70.00
