98% Syrah and 2% Viognier from the ‘Fromm’ vineyard, Wairau, destemmed and co-fermented with 75% whole berries with indigenous yeasts to 12.5% alc., the wine on skins 2-3 weeks and aged 16 months in 12-15% new barriques and demi-muids, Very full, very deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with youthful purple hues. The bouquet is firmly concentrated with deep, but elegantly presented aromas of blackberry fruit entwined with black and white pepper and seamlessly melded with lifted black and violet florals, some dark herbs and mineral elements. Medium-bodied, this has a tight and concentrated core of black-berried fruits intermingling with black and white pepper, liquorice and spices and a subtle dark herbal line. The palate features fine, grainy tannins and fresh acidity, lending a firm, lively, linear flow. The flavours of black fruits, spices and pepper are carried to a moderately long, elegant finish. This is a tightly bound black-fruited Syrah with peppery and spicy notes, a fine, grainy structure and lively mouthfeel. Match with Asian and Middle Eastern cuisine over the next 5+ years. 17.5+/20 Nov 2015 RRP $39.85 Hand-picked MS clone fruit with Grippat and Chave clones, primarily from the ‘Fromm’ vineyard, and a small portion from the Brancott Valley, co-fermented with 2% Viognier from the ‘Fromm’ vineyard to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 16-18 months in 600 L demi-muids and 228 L piece French oak. 10-15% new. Full, dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly presented with intense and concentrated aromas of black berried fruits infused with black and white pepper, lifted by floral and spice notes. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant in proportion and softly rounded in texture. Luscious and sweet fruit flavours of black berries, white and black pepper are lifted by violet floral and spice elements. The tannins are fine-grained and powdery, lending a smooth flow and discreet acidity adds to the tension and fresh mouthfeel. The wine carries to a gently mouthfilling, dry, aromatic finish. This is a smooth, very aromatic, peppery Syrah with fine-grained tannin structure. Serve with Middle Eastern fare over the next 5+ years. 17.5+/20 May 2015 RRP $39.85
