Fromm ‘Fromm Vineyard’ Marlborough Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 20-May-2014
Dark red colour with purple hues. This has an elegant and fragrant nose with savoury red berry fruits alongside game and meat notes, the fruit lifted with white and black pepper perfumes. Medium-full bodied and elegantly presented, black berry and black peppery fruit flavours show with richness and lusciousness. White pepper and floral notes from the 4% co-fermented Viognier provide aromatic lift, and the mouthfeel is enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity. The palate is guided by fine-grained, background tannin structure and the flavours flow with good energy and linearity to a lush, aromatic finish. The accessibility will see it drinking well over the next 6+ years. 18.5/20 May 2014 RRP $N/A Very dark, deep, black-red colour with purple hues on rim. The bouquet is very tightly bound and concentrated with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, with pepper, spices and mineral elements. Subtle, detailed notes of game, tar and dark herbs emerge in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate has rich black fruits with complex mineral and iron elements framed in a sleek, fine-featured and very concentrated framework. The tannins are extremely refined and the acidity bright and enlivening, the wine showing excellent elegance and vitality. The extraction carries the fruit to a very long and tight, sinewy finish. This is a classical minerally ‘Fromm Vineyard' Syrah, fine and firm with the concentration and vitality to develop over the next 10 years. Serve with roasted red meats or with hard cheeses. MS Syrah clone, from 20 y.o. vines, and 4% Viognier, both varieties from the ‘Fromm' vineyard, Wairau Valley, co-fermented with wild yeasts to 13.5% alc. The wine was aged 16-18 months in French oak including 600 L puncheons and pieces. 10-20% new. 100 dozen made. 18.5+/20 Aug 2012 RRP $56.00
