Frizzell Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 22-Aug-2013
Hawke’s Bay fruit destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged in barrel, but with a portion tank-aged. 300 dozen made. Dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour, lighter on rim. The nose is fresh, brash and intense with aromas of ripe, black berries and black pepper. Dark herbs and dark red florals emerge in the glass. Medium-full bodied, ripe black berried fruits intermingle with dark herbs, pepper and minerals. The palate has a concentrated core with firm, grainy tannins providing good structure and grip. This has drive and presence, with good acid brightness adding to the freshness and robustness. The texture carries the flavours to a dry, firm and moderately long finish of black fruits and minerals. This is a concentrated Syrah with black fruit flavours and a firm palate. Serve with roasted and grilled red meats, and casseroles over the next 5-6 years. 18.0-/20 Aug 2013 RRP $24.95 Hawke's Bay Syrah destemmed and fermented to 13.0% alc., with a portion aged in barrel. 300 cases made. Bright, deep, purple-hued red, very youthful in appearance. Fresh black fruits and white pepper lifted with soft violetty perfumes abound on the nose. Medium-bodied, this is still youthfully tight with light, primary flavours of black berry and plum fruits, violetty florals and white pepper. The tannin extraction is modest and along with low acidity, the mouthfeel is soft, supple and very approachable. This is an up-front, easy to appreciate, youthful Syrah with black fruits, pepper and spice notes to match barbecued foods and pizza over the next 3+ years. 16.5+/20 Apr 2012 RRP $23.95
