Forrest ‘The Doctors’ Marlborough Gruner Veltliner 2011

Gruner Veltliner from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 03-Sep-2013
Second crop wine from vines planted in 2008 in the ‘Conder's Bend' vineyard, tank fermented with press fraction in old oak to 11.6% alc. and 8.7 g/L rs, aged on light lees. Very pale straw colour with green hues, pale on rim. The bouquet shows aromas of herbs and grass with an aromatic, lifted gooseberry fruit component and white pepper. Off-dry to taste, this has good volume of fruit with a lantana, waxy, herby fruitiness that is softly mouthfilling. Fine in texture and rounded, a little oiliness, Semillon-like, adds to the palate accessibility. Discreet acidity keeps the palate bright and carries the flavours through to a long, dry finish. This is an up-front wine with distinctive flavours in the green stonefruit spectrum, and an attractive oiliness. 17.0-/20. Second crop of this Austrian variety from vines planted in the ‘Condors Bend' vineyard fermented to 11.5% alc. and 8.7 g/L rs. Brilliant, pale straw-yellow colour, a little lighter on rim. The nose is gently compact and concentrated with aromas of greengages, lantana, grass and white pepper. Dryish to taste, flavours of grass, capsicums, white pepper and herbs form a concentrated core with good drive. Rounded in texture and with a little oiliness to the mouthfeel, racy acidity underlines the palate and carries the flavours to a finely textured, dry finish. This is a dry and concentrated Gruner Veltliner with flavours of herbs and grass that have intensified with time in the bottle. Serve with tapas and first courses over the next 2 years. 1,100 cases made. 17.5+/20 Dec 2012 RRP $25.00 This Austrian variety is becoming increasingly popular in New Zealand. The palate has a soft, juicy lusciousness, and bright acidity providing good tension and line that carries to a floral nuanced finish.
