Falconhead Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 05-Aug-2014
94% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon from the ‘Tantallon’ vineyard in the Bridge Pa district, fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine on skins up the 30 days, and matured 12 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. Very dark, near impenetrable black-red colour with purple hues on rim. The nose is elegant and softly presented with good depth and presence of ripe black plum and dark red berry fruit, the aromatics fruit-focussed and uncomplicated. Medium-full bodied, this has a good core of up-front redcurrant and dark plum fruit flavours. The flavours are clean and straightforward in expression, following a positive vinous line. The tannin extraction is balanced and provides a supple texture, with soft acidity lending roundness to the mouthfeel. The wine flows with good presence to a sweetly nuanced plummy finish. This is an upfront, ripe, dark fruited, supple Merlot blend. Serve with barbecued and grilled meats over the next 3+ years. 16.5/20 Aug 2014 RRP $15.99
