Esk Valley ‘Winemakers Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2013

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 16-Dec-2014
A barrel selection, fruit 54% from the ‘Howard’ vineyard, Bay View and 46% from the ‘Davies’ vineyard on Ohiti Road, hand-picked and WBP, indigenous yeast fermented with high solids to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 30% new French oak with partial MLF. Bright, even, light straw-yellow colour, lighter on rim. The nose is elegantly concentrated and tightly packed with intense aromas of white stonefruits complexed with layers of nuts, mineral and flinty reductive elements and oak toast. Medium-full bodied, the palate is tightly bound and concentrated with white stonefruit flavours, entwined with mealy and nutty elements, along with gunflint and toasty oak. This is finely textured and the mouthfeel is enlivened by good acidity lending cut and tension. The palate flows with good power, energy and vitality, leading to a slender, concentrated and detailed finish with citrus and funky, minerally lees notes. This is an elegantly proportioned and concentrated Chardonnay with complex white stonefruit and flinty flavours. Match with roasted seafood, pouktry and pork over the next 5-6 years. 18.5+/20 Dec 2014 RRP $32.95
