Esk Valley ‘Winemakers Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2012

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-Jan-2014
A barrel selection wine. 50% from the ‘Howard’ vineyard at Bayview, 38% from the ‘Keltern’ vineyard and 12% from the ‘Davies’ vineyard on Ohiti Road. The fruit was hand-picked, WBP, and indigenous yeast fermented with full solids to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 60% new French oak barriques. Bright straw-yellow colour with pale lemon-green hues. This has a concentrated and powerful nose of white and yellow stonefruits revealing layers of savoury, mealy, nutty oak, flinty lees and subtle funky smoke and mineral elements, with toasty nuances providing great complexity and detail. Full-bodied, the palate is mouthfilling with powerful flavours of white stonefruits, nuts and toasty oak. This is layered with waves of flavour, and the textures are open, robust and grainy providing real presence and grip. Fresh acidity enlivens the palate and enhances the fruit expression, and the flavour flow with drive to a very long finish with citrus, nutty and toasty flavours. This is a fulsome and robust, textured Chardonnay with a complex, layered interaction of stonefruits and nutty, toasty oak. Match with roasted poultry and pork over the next 5 years. 190 cases made. 19.0-/20 Jan 2014 RRP $28.00
