Very full, deep, black-purple red colour. The bouquet is very full and harmoniously presented with densely packed aromas of dark, earthy plum fruit and black and aromatic red currants. Nuances of earth, leather and a hint of tar provide complexing interest, and the nose is quite complete. Medium-full bodied, bright and lusciously sweet dark plum and berry fruits fill the palate. The fruit sweetness and richness is enhanced by good acidity. The wine is openly structured with good tannin extraction that provides volume, the tannins and mouthfeel now beginning to soften and become rounder. Layers of dark herbs, black and red currants, leather and earth add to the depth of flavour and are carried by fine-grained, supple tannins to a long, lingering finish. This is a full, openly accessible, rich and complex-flavoured Merlot-blend. Match with roasted red meats and hard cheeses over the next 6-8 years. 73% Merlot, 14% Malbec and 13% Cabernet Sauvignon from the ‘Cornerstone’ and ‘Ngakirikiri’ vineyards in the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 18 months in 50% new French oak barriques. 18.5+/20 Jan 2014 RRP $59.00
