Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 10-Sep-2017
Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is fine and tightly concentrated, with taut, but dense aromas of ripe blackberry fruit along with iron-earth complexities speaking of the Gimblett Gravels, along with beautiful fragrances of spice, game and liquorice, and mineral detail. Dark, deep, concentrated black fruits feature on the palate, with great intensity and iron-earth complexities, minerals and oak. This has excellent underlying power. Rich and well packed on the palate, the textures are very fine-grained, but the extraction is serious. The depth, extract and drive indicates this is extremely ageworthy. 100% Syrah from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 55% new French oak. 400 cases made. 19.5-/20 Sep 2017 RRP $61.99 Very dark, inky black-red with purple hues. The nose is powerful and intense with deeply packed, vibrant black-berried fruits melded with Asian spices, black pepper, unfolding lifted dark-red fruits and florals along with exotic oak and savoury game complexities. Nuances of minerals add to the complexity. Full-bodied, the palate features rich, lusciously sweet and vibrant fruit flavours of ripe blackberries and black pepper, along with Asian spices, plums and florals. Exotic oak elements add lift. The palate has real concentration and intensity. Balanced acidity lends vitality and energy and the rich fruit is supported by very fine-grained, serious extraction and structure. The lush fruit flavours and tannins carry to a very long, lingering, succulent and concentrated finish. This is a wonderfully rich and luscious, vibrantly fruited Syrah with blackberries, black pepper and spices and serious underlying structure. 10-12+ years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 55% new French oak. 400 cases made. 19.5/20 Sep 2016 RRP $60.00
