Esk Valley ‘Winemakers Reserve’ Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 18-Oct-2015
Very dark, near impenetrable purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on edge. The nose is soft, full and voluminous, with open and accessible, harmoniously interwoven aromas of ripe black-berried fruits with violet florals, iron-earth elements, Asian spices and subtle herbal nuances. Gentle layers of black pepper, tar and oak unfold, adding layers of interest. Medium-full bodied, full, broad and softly mouthfilling flavours of succulently ripe black fruits are integrated with waves of savoury florals and spices, and complexing earth and game notes. The palate and mouthfeel are balanced with rich textures and structure, and gentle acid freshness. The tannin presence builds in the glass and the wine flows harmoniously, forming a lively, rich and savoury, long-lingering finish. This is a full, mouthfilling, harmoniously layered, spicy and earthy Syrah with a fresh palate. Match with slow-cooked lamb and with casseroles over the next 10-12 years. 100% Syrah from the ‘Cornerstone’ vineyard, indigenous yeast fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 35% new French oak. 365 cases made. 19.0+/20 Oct 2015 RRP $59.99
