Esk Valley Gimblett Gravels Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-Jan-2014
Very full, very dark, near impenetrable purple-black red colour, a little lighter on rim. The nose is softly full and even with aromas of ripe dark plums and red berry fruits, fragrant red currants, florals and subtle oak all harmoniously entwined and presented, building in depth in the glass. Full-bodied, gently intertwined flavours of redcurrants and dark plums are lifted with aromatic florals and grow to fill the palate. The mouthfeel is very fine and smooth with refined and supple tannin extraction, and fresh from balanced acidity. The palate is complete and well integrated with a solidness that leads to a full, dry finish revealing some herbal nuances. This is a fulsome, well-balanced Merlot-based blend with aromatic red fruits and a completeness to the mouthfeel. Serve with lamb and beef dishes over the next 5+ years. 54% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Malbec from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 25% new French oak barriques. 18.0/20 Jan 2014 RRP $23.00
