Esk Valley Gimblett Gravels Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2014

Blended Red from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 06-Oct-2015
Very dark, near impenetrable, purple-hued black-red colour, with a ruby edge. This has a full, rounded and deeply packed nose with fulsome, near robust aromas of dark red plum and black berried fruits, along with notes of blackcurrants and earth, all harmoniously melded and layered. Medium-full bodied, the palate is full and softly rich, and fruit-focussed, with an amalgam of blackberries, black plums and curranty fruit. Subtle spice, herb and earth elements add detail and interest. The mouthfeel is harmonious with the fruit supported by soft and fine tannin extraction lending grip and structure, and the acidity is integrated. The wine has a rich breadth and carries to a softly full finish of black plums and currants. This is a full, mouthfilling, fruit-expressive Merlot-based blend with plenty of soft, textured structure. Serve with roast lamb, beef and venison over the next 6-8 years. A blend of 44% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Malbec and 11% Cabernet Franc from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 15% new French oak barriques. 18.5/20 Sep 2015 RRP $19.99
