Escarpment ‘Kupe’ Martinborough Pinot Noir 2010

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Wairarapa & Wellington
Review Date : 11-Aug-2013
Very full, deep, black-hued purple-red colour, youthful in appearance. This has a concentrated and densely packed nose, powerful and deep with ripe dark red berry fruits complexed by savoury whole bunch aromas and underlying dark red floral, unfolding a little smoke and charry interest. Fullish bodied, concentrated black fruits with layers of violets, char, savoury dark herbs form a full-flavoured, mouthfilling, rich and near luscious palate. Firm tannin extraction supports the fruit with good acidity provide linearity and drive, and the textures match the fruit boldness. This is a rich, complex and structured wine with strong whole cluster influence. 6-8+ years. Full, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, showing a hint of garnet on rim. The nose is very full, powerful and densely packed with complex aromas of ripe dark berry and plum fruits, savoury, meaty game notes, dried herbs, whole bunch stalk, mushrooms and oak, as well as floral perfumes. Full-bodied, the flavours are very rich and concentrated, showing layers with savoury black plums, black berries and cherries, dark herbs and minerals. There is plenty of fine tannin extraction to match the fruit weight, and a solid, rich core forms the heart of the wine. This has great line and drive, and the wine has a very long finish featuring sweet and savoury black fruits, dried herbs, and soy-sauce flavours, with good acidity carrying the nuances. This is a full-bodied rich and complex Pinot Noir with real fruit presence, and, one of the bigger ‘Kupe' wines. Match with slow-cooked red game meat over the next 8-10+ years. 19.0+/20 Mar 2012 RRP $85.00 Very dark, impenetrable black-red colour. This has an exceptionally complex and layered bouquet, revealing dark berry and cherry fruits, savoury game and oak cedar, the nose particularly powerful and densely packed. On palate rich, dense and powerful too, with layers of complexity that unfold. Savoury dark berry fruit, a little portiness even, savoury mushrooms and spices galore. Theis is a real mouthful, with great structure. The acidity is excellent and provides balance and real liveliness and speaks of potential. A long finish completes the wine. I identified this as ‘Kupe' by way of its complexity and serious extraction in the bl.ind tasting. My 2nd preferred wine of 5 wines tasted. 19.0+/20  Jan 2012 Own rooted, close-planted Abel clone fruit from 11 y.o. vines, from the ‘Kupe' vineyard on Te Muna Road, fermented to 13.5% alc. with 50% whole bunch, the wine aged 12 months in 40% new French oak. Very full, deep, dark purple hued ruby-red, near opaque, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is very full, intense and powerfully packed with aromas of dark berry and savoury black plum fruit, along with notes of game, earth and truffle-oil resulting in considerable interest and complex layers. Full-bodied and well-concentrated, there are intense and rich flavours of sweet, lush dark plum and berry fruits, interwoven with savoury game, earth, dried herbs as well as truffles. The flavours are still bound up and awaiting further release. There is excellent underlying structure, the tannins and acidity providing firmness and tension, leading to a sustained, sweet and spicy finish. A fulsome, complex wine to match with flavoursome game meat over the next 10 years. 19.5/20 Dec 2011 RRP TBA
