Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-May-2025
Deep ruby-red with a deep purple hue, lighter on the rim. The nose is full, with aromas of plum, blackberry, black olive, pancetta and rich herb. Full-bodied, aromas of plum and blackberry intermixed with raspberry, black olive, pancetta, dried herb, star anise and minerals. The dense fruit reflects on palate weight alongside fine-grained tannins, contributing to the structure. Fresh acidity drives with spice to a sustained, savoury finish. This Syrah is well-made, with alluring black fruit, richness, drive and a fine structure. Match with roasted lamb and charred steak over the next 10 years. Fruit from Bridge Pa Vineyard (85%), Te Awanga Vineyard (10%), and Gimblett Gravels (5%), comprising 98% Syrah and 2% Tempranillo, all handpicked. Fermented in small batches, the wine underwent natural spring malolactic fermentation (MLF). Aged 22 months in French oak barrels, 30% new oak, and a further 8 months on light lees. Unfined. 13% alc. 19/20 pts (95 pts) May 2025 RRP $44
