Elephant Hill ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2014

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 24-Aug-2016
Very dark, black-hued purple-red colour, near saturated. The nose is elegantly presented with sweet and ripe aromas of blackberry fruit with subtle layers of plums, boysenberries and notes of blue fruits, along with sweet oak, Asian spices and hints of black pepper. The whole cluster stalk componentry is integrated and lends depth and nuance. Medium-full bodied, the palate features sweet and rich, ripe and luscious flavours of blackberries, black plums, boysenberries and hints of blue fruits. The mouthfeel is opulent, with sweet oak and spice layers adding to the richness. The fruit is supported by very fine-grained tannin grip and extraction, and enlivened by balanced acidity. The wine carries to a long, lingering, reserved finish. This is a beautifully ripe and sweet fruited Syrah with spice and oak layers and fine-structured palate. Match with pork, lamb, beef and venison over the next 7-9+ years. Syrah fruit from 50% ‘Gimblett’, 30% ‘Te Awanga’ and 20% ‘Triangle', co-fermented with 1% Viognier to 13.5% alc. with 25% whole bunches, the wine aged 19 months in 40% new oak, blended and aged a further 6 months in tank on lees. 19.0-/20 Aug 2016 RRP $49.00
