Elephant Hill ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2013

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 22-Jul-2015
A clonal blend of 50% MS, 45% clone 470 and 5% Chave, the fruit 85% from the company’s Gimblett Gravels vineyard, 14% from the Te Awanga vineyard, co-fermented with 1% Viognier and 10-12% whole clusters to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 15 months in 35% new French oak. Full, very deep, saturated purple-black red colour, very youthful in appearance. This has a refined and tightly concentrated nose with penetrating aromas of ripe blackberry fruit melded with Asian spices, black pepper and black and violet florals. Subtle nuances of exotic musk and black minerals lend an fragrant piquancy to the ripe fruitiness, and subtle, cedary oak emerges with aeration. Medium-full bodied, the wine is elegantly proportioned and tightly bound, the fruit concentrated but decadently succulent and vibrant, with the core of black fruits, black pepper, spices and musky florals promising to unfold more in the glass. The fruit is underlined by very fine-grained, flowery tannin extraction and enlivened by fresh, lacy acidity, and the wine flows with plenty of tension and energy leading to a very succulent, ling-lingering finish of black fruits, spices and florals. This is an elegantly concentrated, succulently rich and exotic black-fruited Syrah with very fine structure and a vibrant, lively mouthfeel. Match with slow-cooled game meat dishes over the next 8-10 years. 19.0-/20 Jul 2015 RRP $49.00
