Elephant Hill ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2012

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-Jan-2014
The first release of a ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay for Elephant Hill. Clone 15 and 95 fruit from the Te Awanga vineyard, hand-picked over 4 passes, WBP and indigenous yeast fermented equally in French barriques and puncheons to 13.6% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 40% new oak on lees with no MLF. Bright, full, light-golden yellow colour, lighter on rim. The nose is powerfully intense with tightly concentrated and penetrating aromas of ripe white and yellow stonefruits, toasty, bacon-like oak and oxidative and nutty complexities. Minerals, steel and saline detail add intricate interest. Medium-full bodied, powerfully intense and concentrated flavours of yellow stonefruits nuts and toasty oak form an elegantly proportioned, driven core. The mouthfeel is crisp, racy and refined in texture with a creaminess from the barrel-ferment. Layers of oxidative and oak complexities merge with acid and saline freshness and piquancy. The palate is carried by fruit extract and alcohol drive to a strong, lingering finish with an amalgam of citrus, toasty oak and nutty flavours. This is a very powerful and complex, concentrated Chardonnay with stonefruits and nutty, toasty flavours. Match with roasted and grilled seafood and white meats over the next 4-5+ years. 19.0-/20 Jan 2014 RRP $45.00
