Elephant Hill Le Phant Rouge 2023, Hawke’s Bay

Blended Red from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-Nov-2024
☆☆☆☆☆
Deep ruby-red with a purple core, lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full, with depth, displaying aromas of blackcurrant, plum, vanilla, mocha and cedar. Medium-full bodied, aromas of blackcurrant and plum intertwined with red berry, vanilla, mocha, cedar and nutmeg. The fruit is clean and pure; enlivening acidity carries through a fine-grained, soft tannin mouthfeel. The bright, lifted presence and lively acidity entice a second sip with food. Match with beef ribs and shepherd's pie over the next 5+ years. A blend of three subregions with 84% from the Gimblett Gravels, 44% Merlot, 42% Syrah, 13% Malbec and 1% Tempranillo, fermented to 13% alc, aged 60% in tank, 40% in seasoned French oak for 17 months on light lees. 18.5-/20 pts (92 pts) Nov 2024 RRP $26
