Elephant Hill ‘Le Phant’ Hawke’s Bay 2013

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 20-Jun-2014
Hand-picked fruit, 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Malbec from the company’s Gimblett Gravels, Te Awanga and Bridge Pa Triangle vineyards, fermented over 14 days to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in oak. Full, deep, near impenetrable, purple-hued black-red colour. This has a very elegant and finely presented nose with fragrant and subtly interwoven aromas of ripe red and blackcurrants, dark red plums, and sweetly lifted oak, all tightly concentrated with good intensity. Medium-full bodied, a tightly concentrated heart of sweet, ripe black and red berry fruits and delicate oak spices is supported by very fine-grained tannin extraction. The structure shows great finesse with excellent line, unfolding fragrant red floral detail and plummy nuances. Soft, ripe acidity adds to the succulent mouthfeel and provides poise, as the flavours lead to a very long, nuanced finish. This is a beautifully elegant, refined and concentrated Merlot-based wine with ripeness and fragrance. Match with lamb, beef and semi-hard cheeses over the next 5-7+ years. 18.5/20 Jun 2014 RRP $24.00
