Elephant Hill ‘Le Phant’ Hawke’s Bay 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 28-Jan-2014
Very dark, near saturated, black-purple red colour. The bouquet is elegant and fragrant with an amalgam of dark plums, lifted herbs, toasty oak, with pepper, spice and floral elements. Cool-spectrum herbal, mint and menthol nuances emerge in the glass. Medium-full bodied, the palate is tight and concentrated with lush dark berry, plum, toasty oak and menthol flavours along with high-toned currant and mint elements. Stalky elements and fresh, brisk acidity enliven the mouthfeel, with fine, smooth tannin extraction guiding the flavours. The palate flows easily and with good energy to a finely textured, lacy finish. This is a cooler-spectrum Merlot-based red with high-toned currant and minty flavours and a lacy, smooth palate. Serve with herb-marinated red meat dishes over the next 4-5 yeas. A blend of hand-picked Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 12 days on skins and aged 12 months in 20% new oak. 17.5+/20 Jan 2014 RRP $22.00
