Named after an ancestor of proprietor Roger Weiss. A blend of Malbec and Merlot from the company’s Gimblett and Te Awanga vineyards, hand-picked and fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged in new oak puncheons. Very dark, deep, near saturated, black-hued purple-red colour. This has an elegantly proportioned bouquet that blossoms in volume, showing aromas of ripe black berry fruits with layers of fruit cake, liquorice and spicy new oak. Medium-full bodied, tightly packed flavours of ripe black fruits, plums and liquorice form an intense and well-concentrated core. The fruit is supported by fine-grained tannins and significant extraction and structure, with discreet acidity lending a degree of elegance. The mouthfeel is firm and the palate has linearity that leads to a dry, sustained finish featuring spicy plum and oak notes. This is an elegantly concentrated, black-fruited Malbec and Merlot blend with the extraction to see the wine develop over the next 6-8 years.
