Domaine du Caillou ‘Les Quartz’ Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2010

Grenache from France - Rhone
Review Date : 04-Apr-2013
Very full and dark, satuated black-red colour with purple hues. This has a very powerful and fully deep bouquet packed with aromas of very ripe raspberry confit and jam, revealing dark herbs, lifted perfumes, and some alcohol. Full-bodied with alcohol power and drive, this is a fulsome and mouthflling wine with plenty of very ripe, sweet and succulent black fruit and dark raspberry Grenache flavours showing opulence. The palate is seriously structured with underlying fine-grained tannins that provide a firm, even flowing backbone and line. Nuances of pepper and raspberry essence unfold and add to the layers, and are carried to a sustained, dry, fine-textured finish. This is a powerful and opulently ripe Chateauneuf-du-Pape that will develop over the next 10-12+ years. Serve with roasted or slow-cooked beef, lamb and venison. 85% Grenache from vines 55 y.o. from ‘Les Cassanets', and 15% Syrah from ‘Les Bedines', fermented to 15% alc., the wine spending 31 days on skins and aged 17 months in oak, the Syrah in burgundy barriques. Certified AB organic. 950 dozen made. 18.5+/20 Sep 2012 RRP $157.99
