DeMorgenzon ‘DMZ’ Stellenbosch Syrah 2013

Syrah from South Africa
Review Date : 04-Apr-2016
Full, dark, deep ruby-red colour with black-purple hues, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is full and deeply packed with aromas of ripe blackberry and dark raspberry fruit, entwined with notes of black pepper, spices, plum jam and layers of dried herbs, dusty earth and nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate is well-proportioned with a softly concentrated core of blackberries, raspberries and plum jam. The fruit has dried herb and earthy detail providing interest. The fruit is supported by grainy tannin extraction, balancing the fruit sweetness, and integrated acid providing some underlying energy. The wine has drive and line, carrying to a light, dark red-fruited and earthy finish. This is a ripe, sweet-fruited Syrah with earthy blackberry, raspberry and plum flavours and a bright grainy structured mouthfeel. Match with lamb and beef, and Mediterranean fare over the next 4+ years. 100% Syrah, estate fruit, hand-picked and fermented with a small portion of whole bunches to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in small barrels, 3,000 L foudres and cement tanks, 10% in new wood. 17.5/20 Apr 2016 RRP $35.00
