Craggy Range ‘Te Kahu’ ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot/Cabernet Franc/ Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2011

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-Nov-2013
Very dark, deep, black-hued, purple-red colour. This has an elegant and fragrant bouquet with ripe black berried fruits and boysenberry elements complexed by herb and violetty floral notes, all subtly interwoven and showing finesse. Elegantly sized on palate, this is refined and tightly bound with energy and tension for good linearity. Sweet plum, black and redcurrant, cedar and spice flavours unfold and follow the fine-grained tannin line. This is a smaller-scale, but very well-concentrated Merlot-based wine that will develop over 6-8+ years. 70% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc, fermented to 12.8% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 19% new French oak. 18.5/20 Nov 2013 RRP $27.95 ‘ Te Kahu’ means ‘cloak’ in Maori and refers to the mist covering the hills around the ‘Giants’ winery. 70% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Malbec and 8% Cabernet Franc, 10% hand-picked, and fermented to 12.8% alc., the wine aged 13 months in 19% new oak barriques. Very full, very dark, near impenetrable black-hued red with purple hues. The bouquet is elegant in proportion with intense aromatics, unfolding layers of ripe, spicy black plums, black and red currants and spicy oak. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegant and up-front with interwoven flavours of black berry fruits, plums, liquorice, oak spices and cedar, underlined by subtle fresh herb elements. The sweetness and richness of the fruit is enhanced by fresh, ripe acidity and the palate flow is underlined by fine-grained tannins and textures. The wine has linearity and the flavours are carried to a very long, dry finish with liquorice and spice nuances. This is an elegant, refined Merlot-based wine with intensity and harmony. Serve with Mediterranean fare over the next 5-7 years. 18.0+/20 Sep 2013 RRP $27.95
