Craggy Range ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2009

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 12-Feb-2011
Syrah has become the star red varietal for Craggy Range and Hawke's Bay over the last few years. 2009 was a very successful vintage for it. Sourced from the ‘Gimblett Gravels' vineyard, this Syrah was fermented to 13.7% alc. and aged 15 months in 31% new French oak barriques. Full, black hued, purple red in colour, this has a fresh, youthful, very intense nose of fruit in primary mode, showing black pepper, black fruits, Oriental spices and violetty florals. The aromatics highlight the superb quality of the fruit. On palate, this is very tightly structured with firm, but fine-grained tannins. The fruit is a little locked up, but the clarity of the perfectly ripened black pepper, black and red fruits and spices shows the potential within. This will open up and develop extremely well over the next 5-7 years and drink well with flavoursome, spicy Asian and Mediterranean red meat dishes. 18.5/20 Jan 2011 RRP $29.95
