Craggy Range ‘Gimblett Gravels Vineyard’ Hawke’s Bay Merlot 2011

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 24-Sep-2013
Very full, deep, near impenetrable black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is elegant and restrained in expression, with soft, pure, ripe dark red plum aromas with subtle dark floral and herb elements underlying. Delicate spiciness shows very sensitive oaking. Medium-bodied, tight and pristine dark plum and red berry fruit flavours form an elegant core. Subtle floral elements and fresh herbs add detail. Very fine-grained tannins build to provide firm textures and significant structure to the mouthfeel. The fruit unfolds on the back palate and flourishes, carrying through to a very long finish with sweet fruit notes. This is an elegant and tightly bound Merlot with fine, firm tannin line and structure. Match with slow-cooked lamb and casseroles over the next 6-8 years. 96% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% hand-picked and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 16 months in 20% new French oak barriques. 18.0-/20 Sep 2013 RRP $21.95
