Conde de Valdemar Rioja Gran Reserva 2004

Tempranillo from Spain
Review Date : 28-Sep-2015
Very dark, deep, black-hued garnet-red colour. The bouquet is full and rounded with a deeply concentrated heart of fully integrated aromas of savoury plums, liquorice, earth, tertiary game complexities, undergrowth and melded cedary oak. Some volatility adds lift to the aromatics. Medium-full bodied, this has a deep and rounded, dense core of savoury plums, earth, undergrowth and game with sweet oak cedar and lifted vanilla notes. Ethereal secondary and tertiary complexities unfold and fill the palate. The mouthfeel features a slightly dry, but driven line, the acidity soft and in the background, allowing the fine tannin structure to lend structure. The textures carry the core to a long, spicy, gamey, lifted, cedary finish. This is a complex Rioja Gran Reserva in its maturity, but it will hold for another 5-7+ years in this state. 90% Tempranillo and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 26 months in French and American oak barrels. 19.0-/20 Sep 2015 RRP $59.95
