Coal Pit The Leo Pinot Noir 2019, Central Otago

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Central Otago & Waitaki
Review Date : 29-Jun-2022
Dark, ruby-red with a black hue, lighter on edge. This has a powerful yet fragrant bouquet; penetrating aromas of red berries and cherries interweave an amalgam of sweet spice, lilac and hibiscus alongside forest floor nuance. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly presented, with a soft weight and concentration, led by red cherries and berries intertwined with lilac and hibiscus, followed by vanilla, cinnamon, black pepper, forest floor, and subtle earthy scent. The mouthfeel is silky with supple, dusty tannins; lacy, tangy acidity added a hint of delicately, haunting, pretty quality. This enticing, hauntingly beautiful Pinot Noir possesses a balanced, red fruit core and spice, shows refinement and power with a reflection of a cooler vintage. Match with roasted pigeon and duck over the next 8 years. Fruit from Gibbston sub-region, handpicked from plantings dating back to 1994, clones 115, 10/5, 777, fermented with 35% whole bunch, 4-6 days cold soak, aged 10 months in French oak, 40% new oak. 249 cases & 100 magnums produced. 19/20 pts (95 pts) June 2022 RRP $140
