A blend of 31.5% Cabernet Sauvignon from Gimblett Road, with 31.5% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc with 5.5% Malbec from the Te Awanga vineyards, hand-picked and fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged nearly 3 years in new French oak barriques. Very dark, deep, near black-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on the rim. The nose is full, powerful and bold in expression with deep aromas of ripe blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, along with black plums and redcurrants, harmoniously entwined with notes of cassis, dark herbs, earth and mineral notes. The oaking is balanced and adds spice elements. Medium-full bodied, rich, luscious and fulsome flavours of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants, cassis and plums feature on the palate. Complexing earth, herb and mineral layers unfold from the core. The mouthfeel is fulsome, but vibrant and lively with freshness balancing the fine-grained extraction, grip and structure. The body, richness, sweetness and textures are all in balance and proportion, and the wine carries to a long, elegant finish of black fruits, spices and oak. This is a rich, lush and powerful Bordeaux-varietal blend with ripe black fruits along with herbs and earthy notes, and a vibrant, structured mouthfeel. Serve with roasted red meats and hard cheeses over the next 8-10+ years. This is the seventh release of ‘The Basket Press’ and less than 1,000 bottles were made. 19.0+/20 Dec 2015 RRP $165.00
