Church Road ‘TOM’ Merlot/Cabernet 2005

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-May-2016
Very dark, black-red colour with a slightly lighter edge, youthful in appearance. The bouquet is intense and concentrated with a refined penetration, still tightly bound with ripe black-berried fruits at the core, unfolding layers of fragrant lead-pencil, black floral and cedary oak notes and nuances of secondary, savoury green olives. Medium-full bodied, the palate features tightly concentrated and deep flavours of vibrant and lively blackberry and blackcurrant fruits with aromatic plums, black and violet florals and cedary oak. Subtle savoury development elements emerge in the glass. The tannins are very fine and powdery, and the extraction seriously structured. Very fine acid vitality contributes to the linearity, and the wine carries to a very long, fresh and refined finish. This is a beautifully refined and elegant Merlot blend that will live another 10-12+ years. 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the Merlot spending 4 weeks and Cabernet 3 weeks on skins, then aged 22 months in 85% new French oak barriques. 19.5/20 May 2016 RRP $N/A 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 13.5% alc., the Merlot spending 4 weeks and Cabernet 3 weeks on skins, then aged 22 months in 85% new French oak barriques. Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour. The nose is very Merlot in expression with complex and savoury aromas of earth-infused plums, bramble, dried herbs and meat with cedar lift. The bouquet is soft and full with excellent volume. Full-bodied, the tannin structure and extraction is to the fore, enveloping complex flavours of dark red plums, earth and meaty game. The depth and density of fruit is substantial, and the interest from secondary development grows in the glass, to become mouthfilling alongside the grip. The acidity is restrained, and the fulsome mouthfeel and textures become prominent and dry on the finish. This is a fulsome and well-structured Merlot-based wine that is showing secondary interest. Drink over the next 8-10 years. 18.5/20 May 2013 .RRP $120.00
