Church Road ‘TOM’ Cabernet/Merlot 2009

Cabernet Sauvignon from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 07-May-2016
Impenetrable black-red colour, youthful in appearance. The nose is elegantly concentrated, tight and shy in expression with aromas of ripe blackberries, blackcurrants and layers of savoury dark herbs, green olives, mint and sage, unfolding nuances of black plums, cedar and suggestions of eucalypt. Medium-full bodied, the palate is fine and firmly concentrated with an elegant presentation. The flavours are somewhat reserved with a core of black fruits entwined with plums and dark herbs, along with mint and eucalypt. The wine flows smoothly, with supple tannin extraction and structure, the mouthfeel plush and accessible. This has good linearity, revealing herbal and eucalypt elements on the sustained finish. This has some warm and cool overtones showing simultaneously. It appears quite differently to last tasting, but will develop over the next 8-10 years. 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 4-5 weeks on skins, then aged 21 months in 81% new French oak barriques. 18.5/20 May 2016 RRP $N/A 58% Cabernet Sauvignon and 42% Merlot from the Gimblett Gravels, fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine spending 4-5 weeks on skins, then aged 21 months in 81% new French oak barriques. Very dark, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour with some youthful purple hues. The bouquet is solidly packed, near robust and dense with great presence. Aromas of raw, primary black berry, currant, dark herb and minerally aromas abound. This is youthfully brackish, but fragrant lift adds some fineness. Full-bodied, concentrated, ripe black fruits are the highlight on palate. The Cabernet Sauvignon varietal characters are clear, with size and fill the mouth, but the density and power provide great drive. The extraction is considerable, framing the fruit, and the tannins very fine-grained. Mineral, tar notes and black herb elements along with black floral hints become revealed, the oaking quite unobtrusive. The mouthfeel bristles with energy from the acidity, and carries the palate to a very long, sustained finish. This Cabernet Sauvignon based blend has great depth and concentration with the rawness of youth. The fine-grained and serious structure will see it age 15+ years. 450 cases made. 19.0+/20 May 2013 RRP $150.00
