Church Road ‘McDonald Series’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2011

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 24-Apr-2012
Clone 95 Chardonnay from the ‘Korokipo', ‘Omaranui' and ‘brooklands' vineyards, the ‘Omaranui' fruit machine harvested, the remainder hand-picked and WBP, all of the fruit barrel-fermented by indigenous yeasts to 13.0% alc. The wine spent 10 months in 20% new French oak barriques, with batonnage and MLF except for the ‘Omaranui' portion. Straw-yellow colour with light golden hues, pale on rim. The nose is soft and full with aromas of savoury citrus and stonefruits lifted with yellow floral notes and intermixed with nutty oak and smoky flint elements. Medium-bodied, this is a softly-textured and presented wine with yellow stonefruit and citrus fruit flavours enlivened by zesty acidity that provides a steely, mineral-like cut. Subtle layers of nuts, spices and oak along with a fine textural thread add interest and carry through to a bright, fresh finish. This soft, savoury, citrussy Chardonnay has layers of interest and an underlying racy freshness. Serve with seafood, poultry and pork over the next 3-4+ years. 18.0-/20 Apr 2012 RRP $32.99
