Church Road ‘Grand Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Syrah 2011

Syrah from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 15-Dec-2013
Very dark, deep, purple-hued ruby-red colour, a little lighter on rim, very youthful in appearance. The bouquet is very concentrated with intensely penetrating aromas of spicy black fruits with a savoury floral aspect, black pepper and toasty oak, with nutmeg and ripe plum elements. Medium-bodied, and tightly bound, the palate features intense fruit flavours of black berry fruits, black pepper, spicy florals and nuances of toasty oak. The mouthfeel has fine grained tannin extraction providing considerable underlying texture and line, but the suppleness and softness from the fruit richness provides balance. Fine acidity leads the palate to an elegant, very long lingering finish with spice and fragrance. This is an elegant and fine-textured Syrah with penetrating spice and fragrance. Serve with Asian duck and pork dishes and Middle Eastern fare over the next 5-7 years. 55% clone 470 and 45% Chave clone, from 55% ‘Redstone’ vineyard and 45% ‘Gimblett’ vineyard, hand-picked destemmed and fermented to 12.5% alc., the ‘Redstone’ portion on skins 18 days, the ‘Gimblett’ parcel for 32 days. The wine was aged 19 months in 35% new French oak barriques. 18.5+/20 Dec 2013 RRP $48.90 470 and Chave clone Syrah from 55% ‘Redstone’ and 45% ‘Gimblett’ vineyards, hand-picked and fermented to 12.5% alc., the portions spending 18 and 32 days respectively on skins, and the wine aged 19 months in 35% new French oak barrels. Very full, dark, deep, near impenetrable purple-hued ruby-red colour. The bouquet is very fine and tightly concentrated with intense and penetrating aromas of fragrant, dark red berry fruits, black pepper, musk and lifted florals intermingling with oak and subtle reductive elements. Medium-full bodied, the fruit flavours are elegantly proportioned and concentrated, showing black fruits, Asian spices and exotic aromatic floral notes and black pepper. The palate has richness and succulence, along with soft acidity countered by very fine-grained, but firm tannin textures and linear drive. The flavours are carried by the structure to a long and sustained finish with flavours of liquorice and exotic spices. This is an elegant, very fine-grained Syrah with concentrated black fruits, perfumes and spice notes. Serve with spicy duck and Middle Eastern dishes over the next 5-6+ years. 18.5+/20 Jul 2013 RRP $48.90
