Charles Wiffen Merlot 2016, Marlborough

Merlot from New Zealand - Marlborough
Review Date : 07-Sep-2020
Deep, ruby-red with a black hue, slightly lighter on the rim. The nose is gently full with good intensity, aromas of plums, dried blackcurrants, melded with dried herbs, leather, liquorice and warm spices. Medium-full bodied, an amalgam of dark berries, plums, dried currants, interwoven dried herbs, leather, dark chocolate toned tannin. The palate is refined with juicy red fruit and lively acid balance, lacy and lifting. Developed flavours of leather, liquorice, dried herbs, complexing flavours, added interest. Tannin extraction has a good grip and a hint of smokiness lingers to a moderately long finish. Match with slow-cooked beef stew and beef steaks over the next 2-3 years. 13% alc. 18/20 pts Sept 2020 RRP $25
