Ch. d’Yquem Sauternes 1976

Sweet Wine from France - Bordeaux
Review Date : 18-Mar-2016
This has a deep, golden yellow colour. Full and densely concentrated with aromas of savoury orange marmalade, barley sugar and toffee, this has a thread of savoury, earthy, tertiary complexity. The nose unfolds in layers of burnished richness, and reveals a faint trace of TCA mustiness with aeration. Mouthfilling and weighty, the density and richness is the feature, the palate with waves of dark orange marmalade, barley sugar and toffee. This has power and grip, with energy to go. Real secondary nutty, toastiness and tertiary savoury earthiness, but also a TCA cork taint note taking the edge off the finish. 19.0-/20 Mar 2016 RRP $N/A Beautifully limpid colour of light gold, with straw yellow hues. Beautifully fresh, elegant and harmonious with honey, caramel and yellow fruits and florals showing on bouquet, lifted a little by some volatility. On palate, a wine of sleekness paired to a powerful core, showing great concentration with finesse. Wonderfully rich, yet refined in its honey and caramel elements. The freshness and tension quite startling. The only detraction was some alcohol heat on the back palate. A superb wine in the final analysis.  19.5/20 Aug 2010
