Calo Rioja Calificada Tempranillo 2011

Tempranillo from Spain
Review Date : 25-Sep-2014
100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa from 30 y.o. vines, fermented to 14.0% alc., 50% aged 3 months in seasoned French and American oak, and 50% aged 9 months in 1 y.o. French barriques. Full, deep, black-hued ruby-red colour. The bouquet is tightly bound and elegantly presented with savoury, ripe, dark red berry fruit aromas entwined with subtle earthy elements, lifted by sweet vanilla oak notes and dark red floral fragrances. Medium-full bodied, softly concentrated flavours of dark red berry fruit, earth and leather form a fine-textured, firm core. The extraction provides a grainy, dry structure to encase the fruit. Savoury, funky game elements and dusty, earthy complexities emerge and lead to a textural, savoury, leathery finish. This is a well-concentrated, dry-textured Rioja with savoury, leathery and dark red fruit flavours and some funky interest. Serve with slow-cooked game meat dishes and casseroles over the next 4-5 years. 17.5-/20 Sep 2014 RRP $25.00
