Calo Rioja Calificada Joven Tempranillo 2013

Tempranillo from Spain
Review Date : 24-May-2015
Dark, deep, ruby-red colour, lighter edged. This has an elegant nose with a firm, tight and restrained nose, showing savoury dark red fruits with pepper, game and nutty detail, unfolding an earthy, minerally layer. Medium-full bodied and tightly bound, the fruit expression is shy, the palate showing savoury red berry fruit flavours entwined with minerals, nuts and earth. Fine, grainy, drying tannins provide a textured mouthfeel and plenty of vinous presence, with subtle acidity. The extraction leads to a long, tight finish with grainy tannin length. This is a tight, vinous Rioja with dry, grainy textures and shy fruit flavours. Serve with lamb, beef and hard cheeses over the next 4+ years. 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha from 30 y.o. vines from Rioja Alavesa, fully destemmed and fermented to 14.0% alc., a portion of the wine aged in seasoned large format oak. 16.0+/20 May 2015 RRP $21.99
