Calmel & Joseph ‘Les Terroirs’ Cotes du Roussillon Villages 2011

Syrah from France - Other
Review Date : 27-May-2014
Very dark, impenetrable, black-hued ruby-red. The nose is full and softly packed with aromas of ripe, dark red plum and boysenberry fruit aromas with layers of savoury jam and earth that unfold in the glass. Full-bodied, mouthfilling fruit flavours of savoury dark red berry fruits and plums are intermixed with sweet jam and earthy elements. The fruit has a liveliness enhanced by underlying acidity, and is encased by fulsome, blocky tannins and grainy structure. This is sweetly robust and the extraction carries the palate to a dry, textured finish. This is a fulsome, robust and rustic Cotes du Roussillon red with sweet, savoury fruit to match casseroles and slow-cooked red meat dishes over the next 5+ years. 40% Carignan from 50 y.o. vines, 40% Syrah and 20% Grenache, from 70% schist and 30% clay and limestone terroirs, the Carignan undergoing carbonic maceration, and the wine fermented to 14.5% alc. 16.5+/20 May 2014 RRP $15.99
