Cable Bay ‘Five Hills’ Waiheke Island Merlot/Malbec 2012

Merlot from New Zealand - Northland & Auckland
Review Date : 13-Jun-2014
A blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Malbec from 5 western hillside sites, hand-picked and fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine aged 14 months in French oak barriques. Very full, dark ruby-red colour with some purple hues. This has an elegantly concentrated bouquet of black fruits, showing an array of berry, plum and currant notes lifted with floral elements interwoven with black pepper and spices, revealing savoury meat and cedary oak complexities. Medium-bodied, the palate features a tightly bound core of black plum and curranty fruit with spicy detail. The oaking is very sensitive and quite integrated. Very fine-grained, supple tannins and lacy acidity support the fruit, forming a firm and concentrated line that leads to a long lingering, dry-textured, refined finish. This is an elegant and harmonious, firm-structured Merlot blend with an array of black fruit flavours. Serve with roast beef or lamb over the next 6-8 years. 18.5-/20 Dec 2013 RRP $38.00
