Ca’ Del Matt Barbera d’Asti DOCG 2008

Barbera from Italy - Piedmont
Review Date : 31-May-2012
Barbera fruit from Nizza, made by Matt Thomson for the Alpha Zeta winery. 13.5% alc. Very dark, deep ruby–red colour, the nose is full of very ripe, sweet dark berry fruits with hints of plums and gamey meats. Full and juicy, lush and lively, this is up-front with plenty of pleasing rich dark-fruited flavours, all backed by a balanced structure. The tannins are fine-grained and supple, and good acidity allows freshness to show. This is a modern, fruit-forward style with accessibility, and the balance to keep 6-8+ years.  18.0/20  May 2012 Barbera is the red Piedmont varietal next in prestige after Nebbiolo. Fruit for this wine from sites around the village of Nizza, the wine made by Matt Thomson at the Cantina Sociale in Nizza. Deep ruby-red in colour, this has a full, broad and voluminous nose of red berry fruit and plums underlined by savoury, earthy bramble notes. Full and quite densely packed on the palate with soft earthy, bramble-like berry fruit flavours, the tannins are rounded and allow the flavours to fill the palate. Good acidity provides tension and a crisp finish as well as length. 13.5% alc. This will match roasted red meat dishes and semi-firm cheeses over the next 3-5 years. 16.5+/20 May 2011 RRP $25.75
