Brookfields Hingland Merlot 2020, Hawke’s Bay

Merlot from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 29-Sep-2021
Full, deep ruby-red with a dark core, lighter on the rim. The nose is full, dense with nuances of dark plums and blackberries, entwined with cigar, liquorice, unfolding sweet spices of vanilla, cardamon. Full-bodied, vibrant aromas of plums and blackberries melded with cardamon, nutmeg and vanilla, along with cigar and liquorice unveil. The fruit is bright and juicy, emphasised by a positive bitter liquorice element, supported by a balanced acid flow to a dry, lengthy finish. Savoury, fine-grained tannin provides a firm grip and vitality, subtle smokiness lingers. This robust Merlot is compiled of juicy fruit, spices, youthful and firm velvety tannin with a long, savoury finish. Match with beef tomahawk and meat stew over the next 10+ years. Fruit was sourced from Mere Road just out of Hastings, fermented to 13.5% alc, aged in new and seasoned French oak barriques for 1 year. Vegan friendly. 19/20 pts (95 pts) Sept 2021 RRP $47
