Though growing grapes and making wine in Yecla for several generations, the Castano family started bottling under their own label in 1980. Made from 100% Monastrell from 30 y.o. vines, 75% of the fruit was fermented traditionally, with 25% undergoing carbonic maceration to 13.5% alc., the wine not seeing any wood maturation. Full, near impenetrable purple-red in colour, this has a shy, restrained nose, with fresh dark berry fruits and some floral notes showing. Medium-full bodied, this has sweetly ripe dark plum and boysenberry flavours with good richness, framed within a well-proportioned and concentrated palate with good, soft tannin structure and acidity adding to the brightness and juiciness. This will be a hearty and approachable wine to serve with Middle Eastern cuisine and barbecued meats over the next 3-4+ years. 16.5+/20 Mar 2011 RRP $16.95
