Bodegas Castano ‘Hecula’ Yecla Monastrell 2014

Mourvedre from Spain
Review Date : 08-Aug-2016
Very dark, full, near impenetrable black-hued ruby-red colour, with slight purple hues on the rim. The nose id broad and densely packed with aromas of ripe black-berried fruits entwined with layers of dark herbs and spice, along with some dusty and earthy elements, unfolding complex nuances of undergrowth, tar and nutty oak. Medium-full bodied, the palate features fulsome and sweetly luscious flavours of blackberry fruit melded with layers of spices and dark herbs, along with earthy and mineral nuances. The rich fruit is balanced and encased by grainy tannin texture and refreshing background acidity. The bold flavours show through the structure and carry through to an elegantly proportioned finish with subtle aromatic oak notes. This is a fulsome, richly flavoured Monastrell with layers of herb, spice, earth and mineral detail and plenty of structure and grip. Match with roasted red meats, slow-cooked game and casseroles over the next 6-7+ years. 100% Monastrell from vines over 38 y.o., fermented to 14.0$% alc., the wine aged 6 months in 50% new oak, of which 80% was French and 20% American. 18.0/20 Aug 2016 RRP $24.99
