Bodegas Castano ‘Hecula’ Yecla Monastrell 2013

Mourvedre from Spain
Review Date : 31-Aug-2015
100% Monastrell bush vines, over 35 y.o. fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged in 80% French and 20% American oak, 50% new. Full, dark, deep, black-hued purple-red colour with ruby on the rim. The nose is elegantly proportioned with firm and finely concentrated aromas of ripe black berried fruits alongside black plum, liquorice and complexing earth, mineral and pepper elements. Some spice and oak lift unfolds. Medium-full bodied, the palate features bright, vibrant and sweet, juicy fruit flavours of blackberries and plums. The wine reveals jam, liquorice and mineral detail, and is balanced by supple, accessible and open tannin structure. The grip is fine-grained and allows the fruit richness carry through with lively drive to a sweet and sustained finish of black fruits, liquorice and minerals. This is a bright, juicy, black-fruited Monastrell with balanced and accessible structure. Match with lamb, been venison and semi-hard cheeses over the next 4-5 years. 18.0/20. Sep 2015 RRP $23.99
