Bodegas Castano ‘Hecula’ Yecla Monastrell 2008

Sauvignon Blanc from Spain
Review Date : 18-Mar-2011
Castano has four vineyard estates in Yecla, ‘La Gruesas', ‘El Espinal', ‘Pozuelo' and ‘Arabi'. The ‘Hecula' is sourced from 35 y.o. Monastell bush vines from ‘La Gruesas' and ‘Pozuelo' fermented to 14.0% alc., the wine aged 6 months in American oak barriques. Very full, almost saturated black-red with purple hues, this has a concentrated and brooding nose of ripe black fruits and boysenberry fruits with minerally and floral nuances. On palate the ripe, wild black fruit flavours are a little restrained at present, but there is a tight intensity and depth. The tannin extraction is significant, but ripe, quite fine-grained and youthfully firm. This will need another 1-2 years to open up, then drink well for another 4-6 years. Match with all red meat dishes and hard cheeses. 17.0/20 Mar 2011 RRP $22.95
