Black Estate Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2012

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 09-Oct-2014
Even ruby-red colour with light garnet hues, lighter on rim with a touch of brick. This has an elegant and refined bouquet with concentrated aromas of savoury red berry fruits intermixed with soft earthy elements piquant dark red cherry fruit and dried herbs. Complexing layers of detail unfold with aeration. Medium-bodied, finely concentrated and complex flavours of red berry fruits, savoury herb and earth feature at the core of the palate. The mouthfeel is sweet-fruited, smooth and silky with very fine tannins in support. The wine has linearity with lacy acid energy and tension providing balancing freshness and vitality. The flavours reveal greater detail and intricacy on the long, lingering finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, silky-textured and complex, savoury flavoured Pinot Noir. Match with mushroom dishes, wild duck, pork and hare over the next 5-7 years. Fruit from the Black Estate home vineyards from ungrafted 10/5 clone planted in 1994 on Awapuni clay loam soils on a gentle north-facing slope. Hand-picked with 8% whole cluster and 10% foot-crushed to give a high portion of whole berries, fermented to 13.0% alc., the wine spending 28-42 days on skins and aged 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques. 18.5+/20 Oct 2014 RRP $42.00
