Black Estate ‘Home’ Waipara Valley Pinot Noir 2014

Pinot Noir from New Zealand - Canterbury & Waipara
Review Date : 18-Apr-2016
Even ruby-red colour with light purple hues and a little garnet on the rim. This has a softly full and gently voluminous nose with elegant, but well-packed aromas of savoury red berry fruits entwined with dark herbs and complexing earth and undergrowth layers. Some nuances of stalk and red floral perfume emerges and the nose blossoms with an integrated arrays of aromatic detail. Medium-bodied and elegantly presented, the palate has a well-packed heart which unfolds mouthfilling flavours of soft, savoury and sweet red berry fruits harmoniously infused with undergrowth, earth and herbal notes. The mouthfeel is soft, but lively with fresh, lacy acidity, and supported by fine-grained background tannins that allow the fruit to feature. The wine flows smoothly to a dry, fine-textured finish of savoury red fruits. This is an elegant, but complex flavoured Pinot Noir with savoury red fruits and an accessible palate. Match with slow-cooked game meat and casseroles over the next 4-5 years. Predominantly 10/5 clone fruit from 3.8 ha from the ‘Home’ vineyard, vines planted in 1994, hand-picked, 100% destemmed and 10% foot-crushed to give 70% whole berries, and indigenous yeast fermented to 12.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in seasoned 228 L French oak casks. 511 dozen made. 18.5-/20 Apr 2016 RRP $42.00
