Black Barn ‘Reserve’ Hawke’s Bay Chardonnay 2014

Chardonnay from New Zealand - Hawke's Bay
Review Date : 26-Aug-2015
A barrel selection. Hand-picked clone 95 and Mendoza fruit, WBP, partially indigenous yeast fermented to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 11 months in 80% new French oak, predominantly puncheons, with 30% MLF, then aged another 2 months in seasoned oak before blending. Bright, light straw-yellow colour with light green hues and some depth, lighter edged. This has a rich, broad and deeply pack nose of ripe yellow stonefruits and tropical fruits melded with creamy barrel-ferment and buttery MLF layers, along with nutty, toast oak detail and subtle complexing flinty nuances. Medium-full bodied, the palate features full, opulently rich and plush flavours of white and yellow stonefruits, ripe citrus fruits, and layers of mealy, nutty oak, creamy barrel-ferment and buttery MLF elements, entwined complexing flinty, mineral nuances. The mouthfeel is soft with great presence and near unctuous textures, and driven by some alcohol power. Fresh acid cut underlines the richness and lends energy. The wine carries to a soft, concentrated long and sustained finish of citrus fruits and oak. This is a rich, opulent Chardonnay with layers of oak and MLF along with subtle flinty complexity. Match with roast pork over the next 5-6 years. 19.0/20 Aug 2015 RRP $50.00
